Summer Service Camp Returns in 2024

Summer camp hosted volunteers eager to make a difference, most completing over 25 service hours. They enjoyed talks by guest speakers, like Sharissa M. from Liliha Library, who discussed library history, using facilities, choosing books, and reading to children. Volunteers got to borrow books for reading. Thank you, Sharissa, for your help! GO! READ

Special guest speaker this week: Mom Akaka discussed her love for reading books. She recently turned 98, celebrating with her family and (below) with her great grandkids. Thank you for sharing your wisdom grandma. Another speakers was Alumn Catherine M. who called in from Ireland. She spoke about her experiences and the importance of service.

The volunteers stamped over 1400 books and ready to over 50 kids at Makiki Christian Preschool. The teachers and kids appreciated the visit and showed their appreciation with special cards, posters, and notes for each reader. GO! READ

Pat Munoz, a senior volunteer, discussed military service, sacrifices, and giving back. During a visit to Punchbowl, they met with Ann Hanson, who shared her experiences in honoring and remembering veterans. Every year the kids receive donated flowers from Watanabe Florists and also collect flowers from their backyards to lay flowers on the graves of our loved ones and those Unknown who sacrificed their lives in war. May they rest in peace.

Volunteers also helped prepare for our Literacy and Educational Fair on 7/13. They worked very hard on videos and posters to encourage reading and service. Mahalo to Nick for being advisor/chaperon for this summer. Enjoy!
